Week 2: Wikis, Blogs, & Writing (Oh, my!)

  1. My first impression about using wikis in education, specifically Wikipedia, is...
  2. What can a blog do for me both in my personal and professional life?

1. I hope this is the right place to put my comments. I know nothing about Wikis and blogs, bit I guess that is why I am in this class. There seems to be so much information out there, I need to find out where to go when I need something.
2. I hope blogs help me communicate with the people I need to when I need to. PA

I hope I can figure out a good way to use wikis. I saw a suggestion that students could write collaborative stories using vocabulary words. I've done that with paper and pencil before, but I can see that it might work better on a wiki.
I can see that blogs could be useful in an English class: a way to encourage writing.

Though I find Wikipedia as a good source to find other sources, I continue to have problems with a cite that is not accountable for its content. I did like the idea of asking students to research a source to determine if it is correct.
I can see the possibility of using a blog to encourage students to comment on a story that they have been assigned to read. DJM

I think Wikis can be a helpful source since it's a collaboration of information on a topic or subject. A way to find new ideas.
I could see myself following a blog that interests me but I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with posting my comments quite yet. I would like to learn more. CT

I don't have the same skepticism with wikipedia as others. I have read the articles and followed up with the citations given...its been enriching each time. Its problematic to use a single source, wiki or not, when doing research. I am still unclear how I may use a wiki in my own teaching practice.
Profession ally,I can see using a blog to foster student collaboration on assignments. Personally, I cant really envision using a blog. I'm not much of a "journaler". I currently have a facebook page, but have only posted a handful of times. Organizing my thoughts into structured sentences is a chore, and I think its mighty presumptive that anyone would be interested anyway.EL

1. Wikis in education, specifically Wikipedia, looks like a great resource, I just need to spend the time exploring the site.
2.I can see the purpose of blogging for a form of communication, especially for a classroom teacher. I am looking for a good way to use it as an administrator. PA

Wikipedia is a good source, but we must understand how to use it. With 460 million hits a month, there must be merit in it. There are 400k edits a day! Wow! It contains encyclopedia type information and can be edited by members. It comes in many languages. The 5 Pillars are the Laws of Wikipedia. They include Neutrality, Encyclopedia Information, Free Content, Anyone may edit, Be Respectful and Civil, and there are No Firm Rules. I like the value of collaboration the best. I learned not to be afraid of Wikipedia. Be aware - it is powerful! The Power of Editing is essentail to Wikipedia. Have faith in online resources. Maclay pays a lot of money for these resources and they are credible. I like the aspect of planning committees, grade level Wikis, Teacher's Lounge, Book Studys, and Home Sick/Absentee missed work type uses. I think Wikis will be quite useful once I get the hang of it! 1. My first impression of wikis was that i was very skeptical, given that the source can come from anywhere - the potential for informational sabatoge is there...however as time has gone on, ive found that alot of the information is valid, yet I still take it with a grain of salt and double check against other sources, particularly if it relates to anything professional.
2. I use blogging as a great source of sharing thoughts and ideas through a football message board...not alot of fellow fans of my team in this area, so being able to essentially carry on discussions about my team with other diehard fans provides alot of interesting insight. Professionally there are certainly ways to utilize blogging, but it needs to be under a somewhat controlled environment - personally I find TWITTER dangerous - too many instances of people apologizing or backtracking from heat of the moment Tweets - like anything, its all about how you use it, but Twitter lends itself to constant opinionating which might not always be a good idea.
