3rd Blog Posting: Blogs in Education
After this week, we will have covered both wikis and blogs in an academic setting. Carefully reflect on their possible uses, and then answer the following question:
- What can a wiki or blog do better than a classroom webpage? The same? No better?
Next, comment on an interesting post this week by another teacher.

Blogs can offer interaction between students, but I fear that they will also take away from the actual inter-personal dialogue that occurs in a lively classroom discussion.
The interactive nature of blogs and wikis makes them very useful. I think students will love them.JC
Since I teach young children, blogs would be a difficult concept for my students. I would like to have a blog as a resource for other teachers or parents to add their ideas or comments regarding what is happening in the classroom. BC
I do not want to spend any more time in front of this box than necessary; nor do I want young people to communicate only through a box.

Blogs are much more interactive in nature. The kids love to share their opinions and this would be a safe way to allow them to express themselves.

What is so much better about a wiki or blog than a classroom webpage is that it is so interactive. I feel it can hold the student's interest. It seems to be the way of the future, because the students are all using social networking. What a great tool!

I agree with the previous anonymous.
In some respects, the web page limits the amount of information readily available. It seems that with both blogs and Wiki there is a wealth of information easily accessible to use as a resource.
I agree that we can't replace actual interpersonal dialogue that occurs in a lively classroom discussion. Students need to interact face to face.JC
I agree with JC. The interactive nature of blogs and wikis are definitely appealing to students.
This person was concerned that blogs will take away from actual inter-personal disscussion, but I feel that it is just another tool to add to your "bag of tricks." Not to replace discussion.

For starters, I think that having a teacher/classroom blog is very current and tech savvy. I think that it's an impressive tool. It would encourage interaction with our students on a whole different level than in the classroom itself. Not instead, but as a supplementary option. Time constraints, however, will be prohibitive. I look forward to seeing how I can incorporate this into my website (as a link). As far as wikis, I look forward to exploring....in my spare time. :o) Loved Les & Daphne's presentations; there's SO much out there! Just remember, we still have a mere 24 hours in our day! css
Using a wiki or a blog is not better than the teaching that goes on in a classroom. However, I think they would definitely add to the children's learning. Using a blog and/or wikis would be another creative way to reach each child since each child has their own particular way of learning. nc
Can't wait to have my blog set up. Just hope my students will respond. I attended a FL meeting last Sat. and learned about so many wonderful site. Can't wait to share them. Just need more hours in each day. I just feel like I am running to catch a bus that just left. KM

I agree that especially with young children the personal interaction is very important.
I am right on that thin line of not wanting to let go of traditional teaching methods and accepting all of the technological advances we are seeing in education, but the more I learn about "what's out there", the more I realize we can still teach the basics, we can still have face-to-face interaction in the classroom, we can still do what we've always done but we can enhance it tremendously with technology. As with all things new it just takes that first leap to get you excited about a tool like blogs or wikis. The more you play, the more fun you have. So just imagine how much fun it must be for the kids. And this is simply the world in which our students live. The more innovative ways we can present information to our students, the better chance we have of reaching all of them. Blogs don't have to take away from classroom interaction because they can be discussed in the classroom. I think they can add to the learning experience by extending the classroom dialogue to the home setting. LL
A classroom webpage is more limited in scope than a blog or wiki. I agree with the other posts that say that blogs and wikis are more interactive, and I would add that they are more visually stimulating than most webpages I've seen. Not knowing much about them yet I would still conclude that blogs and wikis would more readily lead to further exploration than a webpage would. LL
I have thought about this question off and on for the last week. In my position as a high school math teacher, I have not yet discovered how a blog would be helpful for my students. I did visit one high school math teacher's wiki/blog and the only comments from students were about the difficulty of the homework assignment.
As far as the wikispaces for teachers, I can see this as a replacement for our school web pages. A wikispace would allow much more creativity since there are such useful tools available to spruce up the sight.
I am all about trying new things to get my students excited about learning and helping them be successful after graduating from high school. However, I have spent quite a bit of time on the computer trying to find something both relevant and "exciting" for Algebra 2. It's not that I haven't found anything at all, I just haven't found anything that really "wows" me.
Amen to what CSS said!!!! I would love to have more time to devote to finding new ways to deliver the Sunshine State Standards for Algebra II. Unfortunately, we are not given that opportunity.
A wiki is a great tool to interact virtually and share ideas and resources with colleagues or people who share same interests. It, also, lets you build a network that allows us to be current and competitive in our profession.
